Help I'm stuck in my garage
I finally contacted the building owners, asking them to fix the garage door, and to be honest, I'm a bit sad about that.
It was a bit of a game, seeing if I could locate the one sweet spot with my car's tires which seemed to be all that was left of the sensor. I think I spent 5 minutes one day last week trying to get out of the garage.
Oh well, all good things must come to an end.
You, yoo, and yu
How do you know you are out of shape? Perhaps when you seriously consider bringing oxygen canisters the next time you play in an ultra casual dodgeball game.
The SO and I were talking last night, and as she's apt to do, her random thought of the night was that the word "you" needs more variations.
As we got to discussing this, I realized that I often clarified my use of the word by saying things like "you, in the global sense" or a less eloquent "you, as in not you, but a generic you", and of course there's the default you as in, "person I am currently engaged in conversation with".
Database Conversions & Dodgeball
I know Thunderstruck isn't technically an 80's song, but I'm still counting it.
I can happily say the database conversion is all done, and as such it feels fit to add yet another empathic, but likely empty promise to never again do it again.
In regards to inline images/media, I'm unhappy with the implementation I have, and it doesn't look like (on first glance) that I'll be able to create the module with the workflow I want.
Death, Taxes, and Storing Hierarchical Data in a Relational Database
A quick update to the Buildering.net situation. Basically, we're going to convert their install of Ikonboard (no link, because really, you shouldn't use it ever), to Drupal's kinda kludgy "Advanced" Forum module.
The benefit is a unified login system, which is good enough to outweigh the loss of "real" forum features. (Personally, I prefer forums that concentrate on the basics, too many buttons confuse me!).
The Tragedy of Inline Images
I've had some time now to focus more on Drupal, and it's definitely pretty impressive. The extensibility is excellent, and in looking over my latest bookshelf addition, Pro Drupal Development, I can see that I'll be inundated with random bits of "oh I can do that?" for quite awhile.
Of course this presents me specifically with another problem, that being, how to focus my time. I can't imagine freshly stepping into PHP right now. I remember first seeing it in action at around version 3, and building small little guestbooks, and other random widgets.
The joys of almost not being sick
I got into the StackOverflow beta this morning, and have been poking around ever since. It looks really promising, and I hope as it grows it's able to find a way to keep quality high.
In their podcasts, Joel and Jeff discuss how they see that evolving, and a few methods they've implemented to ensure that.
SimpleTest and 80's driving music
It's always kinda sad, the moment you realize your music tastes have largely stopped evolving. I think I read a study on that once, although for the life of me I can't seem to find it.
Anyhow, what I've noticed, is that I definitely prefer (or at least get more excited about) early/mid 90's music. It's just that familiarity I suppose, and remembering the good / bad / silly times those specific tunes bring about.
I hate being sick. And Javascript.
Nothing like deciding to get back into the swing of things and promptly falling ill. I'm going to blame the weather.
On the plus side, all that downtime allowed me to listen to the entire series of podcasts on StackOverflow, which if you think about it, is quite an accomplishment since there are 19 episodes to wade through.
I Give Up.
After years of toying around with my own code, it's time to refocus my energy. Mundanity (aka Dissonance), was a lot of fun. A small community of random people hung out here, unknowingly pawns in my coding exercises.
It's time for a change though, and for me to narrow down my focus. As such, I've chosen Drupal to aid in that.
